            Global warming is the changing of climate. Temperatures vary from day to day and year to year. Global warming is very dangerous. Why is it so?

            Global warming melts the ice at the poles. This would then cover all the flat coastal lands. People would have less land on which to live or grow food.

            Plants and animals are adapted to their climates. If the climate changes rapidly, many may not be able to adapt. Some species will simply die out. Others may spread to cooler climates. They will be struggling with species already in place.

            So what can we do to save the planet? People should stop cutting down forest and burning the wood. There must be a clear regulation of the use of cars and other machines to decrease the amount of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere. Otherwise the earth and all the entirely life will vanish.

The man felt excited having the smartest parrot but he could not understand why the parrot would not say Catano. The man tried to teach the bird to say Catano however the bird kept not saying the word.

At the first, the man was very nice to the bird but then he got very angry. “You stupid bird!” pointed the man to the parrot. “Why can\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t you say the word? Say Catano! Or I will kill you” the man said angrily. Although he tried hard to teach, the parrot would not say it. Then the man got so angry and shouted to the bird over and over; “Say Catano or I\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'ll kill you”. The bird kept not to say the word of Catano.

One day, after he had been trying so many times to make the bird say Catano, the man really got very angry. He could not bear it. He picked the parrot and threw it into the chicken house. There were four old chickens for next dinner “You are as stupid as the chickens. Just stay with them” Said the man angrily. Then he continued to humble; “You know, I will cut the chicken for my meal. Next it will be your turn, I will eat you too, stupid parrot”. After that he left the chicken house.

The next day, the man came back to the chicken house. He opened the door and was very surprised. He could not believe what he saw at the chicken house. There were three death chickens on the floor. At the moment, the parrot was standing proudly and screaming at the last old chicken; “Say Catano or I’ll kill you”.

ZAT ADIKTIF

Zat adiktif adalah bahan makanan atau yang apabila dikonsumsi oleh manusia dapat menyebabkan ketagihan.

Yang termasuk benda-benda adiktif antara lain rokok dan minuman beralkohol.

ROKOK

Mengandung lebih dari 4.000 macam zat, antara lain:

  • Tar, berupa cairan berwarna cokelat. Dapat merusak paru-paru, menghambat sirkulasi oksigen dalam darah,menyebabkan kanker, dan gangguan pernapasan seperti bronkitis.
  • Nikotin, bersifat racun. Pada rokok, inilah bahan yang bersifat adiktif. Dampak dari penggunaan nikotin antara lain kerusakan jaringan otak dan hati,membuat bagian tubuh yang terpapar menjadi kuning, menaikkan tekanan darah, dan memacu kerja jantung.
  • Karbon monoksida, bersifat racun, tidak berwarna maupun berbau. Mengikat hemoglobin lebih kuat daripada oksigen, sehingga tubuh berpotensi kekurangan oksigen.

Dampak negatif dari rokok antara lain:

  • Kanker paru-paru
  • Penyakit jantung
  • Bronkitis
  • dll.

MINUMAN KERAS

Minuman keras adalah cairan jernih, tidak berwarna, berasa pahit, dan bersifat memabukkan. Setiap minuman keras mengandung alkohol. Minuman keras digolongkan berdasarkan kandungan alkoholnya. Contohnya:

  • Bir, mengandung alkohol sebesar 3-7%.
  • Anggur, mengandung alkohol sebesar 12-14%.
  • Gin, rum, wiski, dan brandi, mengandung alkohol sebesar 35%.

Dampak negatif minuman keras antara lain:

  • Sirosis hati
  • Gastritis
  • Kanker mulut, tenggorokan, dan esofagus
  • Hilangnya sejumlah jaringan otot dalam lengan dan kaki, bahkan dapat menyebabkan pelunakan pada otot jantung
  • Rusaknya pankreas
  • Besarnya resiko terkena infeksi, pneumonia, dan memar
  • Karena sifatnya depresan, dapat menidurkan berbagai bagian otak dan sistem saraf.
  • Kematian tak terduga jika alkohol diminum bersama dengan obat lain

Karena dapat menyebabkan tidurnya berbagai bagian otak dan sistem saraf, maka dapat terjadi gejala antara lain:

  • Kelainan psikologis-alkoholik
  • gejala hilang akal secara total
  • paranoia alkoholik (mudah curiga, cemburu, suka menuduh, dan sering terganggu dalam mengekspresikan kejadian-kejadian di sekitarnya dan mungkin mengalami keadaan jiwa yang tidak stabil.
  • sindrom Vernicke (penyakit kurang gizi pada pecandu alkohol, terutama kelompok vitamin B. Ditandai dengan meningkatnya frekuensi mengigau, bingung, takut, sulit berjalan, dan hilang ingatan.)
  • sindrom Karsakoff (kelainan yang menyebabkan otak rusak sehingga penderita tidak dapat berorientasi terhadap waktu dan tempat serta merasa lemah dan geli pada lengan dan kaki karena saraf yang menuju daerah ini dipengaruhi.)
  • Delirium tremens (perubahan kejiwaan yang sangat serius akibat konsumsi minuman keras dalam jangka waktu yang terlalu lama dan penarikan diri akibat ketagihan alkohol secara psikologis.)

ZAT PSIKOTROPIKA

Zat psikotropika adalah zat atau bahan baik alami maupun sintetis yang dapat mempengaruhi pikiran atau sistem saraf.

Ada 5 golongan zat psikotropika, yaitu:

Obat Psikoaktif

Adalah obat yang digunakan dalam ilmu kedokteran jiwa untuk mengobati penyakit mental dan saraf. Jika ada orang yang ketagihan obat jenis ini, maka dia akan menginginkan dosis yang semakin lama semakin besar. Konsumsi terus-menerus dapat menyebabkan kerusakan permanen pada otak dan dapat menyebabkan kematian.

Depresan

Adalah obat yang berfungsi untuk menenangkan orang yang sedang depresi. Obat-obat yang termasuk depresan adalah opiat (yang termasuk alami), sementara itu yang sintetis antara lain:

  • Heroin, memberikan sensasi, seperti menghilangkan rasa sakit, yang menyebabkan pengguna mengalami rasa senang yang luar biasa. Penggunaannya dengan cara disuntikkan. Pada pecandu, jika tidak menggunakan heroin setiap 4-6 jam maka akan merasakan mual, muntah-muntah, nyeri di lambung, keringat dingin, dan demam. Jika overdosis dapat menyebabkan kematian.
  • Morfin, menyebabkan rasa lesu, ngantuk, kebingungan, perasaan bahagia yang berlebihan, dan gangguan sistem pernapasan.
  • Metadon, merupakan obat kedua yang paling banyak menyebabkan kecanduan setelah heroin. Diberikan kepada pengguna heroin yang sedng diobati untuk mengurangi kerasnya gejala-gejala pecandu heroin yang sedang diobati.
  • Barbiturat (pil tidur), memberikan efek menenangkan dan tidur lelap. Orang yang ketagihan akan mengalami gejala seperti demam dan kejang-kejang. Konsumsi terus-menerus dapat menyebabkan kematian.

Stimulan

Adalah zat yang dapat meningkatkan fungsi berbagai organ tubuh melalui efeknya terhadap sistem saraf pusat. Dapat membuat orang lebih aktif, maksudnya mempercepat reaksi badan dan memberikan perasaan tersedianya tenaga yang tidak terbatas, serta dapat juga meningkatkan denyut jantung dan tekanan darah. Contohnya adalah amfetamin, dapat menghilangkan rasa kantuk, jika dipakai berlebihan menimbulkan efek psikotik. Jika dipakai saat kelelahan yang berlebihan dapat menimbulkan halusinasi dan paranoia.

Halusinogen

Adalah zat yang dapat menimbulkan halusinasi bagi si pemakai. Contohnya LSD (Lisergic Acid Diethylamide), dapat menyebabkan paranoia yang mengarah pada perilaku agresif. Contoh lain adalah STP, DMT, meskalin, dan psilosibin.

Euforia

Adalah obat yang dapat menyebabkan perasaan nyaman atau gembira. Contohnya adalah mariyuana dan ganja, menyebabkan orang mabuk dan kacau. Jika dikonsumsi saat tenang, terasa nikmat, namun jika dalam kondisi gelisah, dapat menyebabkan panik yang berlebihan.

CIRI-CIRI PECANDU NAPZA

(narkotika, psikotropika, dan zat adiktif)

Ciri-ciri fisik:

  1. mata merah
  2. mulut kering
  3. bibir berwarna kecoklatan
  4. perilakunya tidak wajar
  5. bicaranya kacau

Smoking is a bad habit that is very hard to break. Smokers are everywhere. Many people smoke just to socialize, but many others are too addicted to quit.

           A cigarette is like a toxin hypermarket. You can find many kinds of toxin in it: acetone, carbon monoxide, tar, arsenic, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, and toluene. The tar itself contains more than 43 substances that can cause cancer. Scientists say that when we are smoking, we put more than 4,000 kinds of toxic materials into our body.

            However, many smokers believed that a cigarette with low tar is less dangerous. And so is a filtered cigarette. But the problem is one cigarette is never enough for addicted smokers.       

            Another myth about smoking is that it cannot only make them awake but also raise their inspiration. This is contrary to the findings of a research in California which show that smokers’ ability to think is lower than of non-smokers.

            Smoking is indeed a serious social problem in our country. The government keeps reminding that smoking is dangerous, not only for smokers themselves, but also for other people in the surroundings (passive smokers). But the warnings do not seem to get any response.

The term globalization is now the objective reality of this world. Within the revolutionary developments of Information Technology (IT), such as DVDs, PDAs, cell phones and other electronic devices, the world turn to be a “huge” village. We can get connected to anybody across the world with less money.

            However, it is important to realize that the available facilities in our life are in fact a double-edged sword. On the one hand, if we make use of them wisely, we can take fully advantage of them. On the other hand, we can easily misuse them well.

            One good example is the use of Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia for our learning. This encyclopedia is commonly written in a single DVD, which consists of a huge amount of information, can be a wonderful source of learning. Simply by typing the keyboard on “search”, we are provided with various readings, recordings and a series of pictures.

            However some students might be tempted to misuse the encyclopedia. Instead of reading and taking advantage of much information available, some students plagiarized from the encyclopedia. They did not read by critically thinking, analyzing and synthesizing the ideas. The just copies and pasted the phrases and sentences from the encyclopedia without knowledge the source. They claimed that they writing pieces were theirs. As we know that taking others work without acknowledging the source is crime.

            In summary, it is important to have long lasting effect of learning, and the genuine passion for learning is needed.
